The ERA Chairs actions support research institutions and universities in attracting high quality human resources under the direction of an outstanding researcher and research manager (the ERA Chair holder) and simultaneously implementing necessary changes to achieve excellence sustainability in a hosting institution in a Widening country.

The scientific field is not defined, however it supposed to be closely related to the expertise of the ERA Chair holder in order to maximize potential of knowledge exchange during her / his presence. The ERA Chair holder ought to establish her / his own team and support the hosting research organisation to improve its research performance and success rate in obtaining competitive funding. The position of the ERA Chair holder must be open to all EU and non-EU nationals.

The grant can have a duration of five years maximum, covering the employment of the ERA Chair holder and a number of team members (e.g. their salaries, administrative costs, travel and subsistence costs).

Taking all this into account the ERA Chair projects’ intention is to increase R&I talents moving to host organisations in the Widening countries along with their international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility.

ERA Chairs is a great example of a snowball effect project. It shows that under excellent leadership of experienced mentor, the whole institution can gain many assets like increasing attractiveness on European or global scale, improving capability to obtain research funding, apply and share good practices with other institutions and society and hiring highly-educated and well-trained research staff.
