Widening
- Teaming will invest in Europe’s research and innovation potential through supporting the creation of new (or upgrading of existing) Centres of Excellence on the basis of partnerships with internationally leading institutions.
- Twinning aims to build on the huge potential of networking for excellence through knowledge transfer and exchange of best practice between research institutions and leading partners.
- ERA Chairs will bring outstanding researchers to universities and other research organisations that have high potential for research excellence.
- The Policy Support Facility will aim to improve the design, implementation and evaluation of national/regional research and innovation policies. It will offer expert advice to public authorities at national or regional level on a voluntary basis, covering the needs to access the relevant body of knowledge, benefit from the insight of international experts, use state of the art methodologies and tools, and receive tailor-made advice.
- Supporting access to international networks for excellent researchers and innovators who lack sufficient involvement in European and international networks. This will include support provided through COST.
- Strengthening the administrative and operational capacity of transnational networks of National Contact Points will allow financial and technical support and ensure the flow of information between them and the Horizon 2020 implementation bodies.
Food for Thought
“European knowledge institutions, such as universities and research organisations (public or private) are today confronted with important challenges: on the one hand they need to advance science, on the other they need to play their role as game changers in society, testing new ideas, and socio-economic development models, spurring innovation, jobs and growth. In doing so, they face uneven conditions: Europe’s innovation divide persists, despite several rounds of sustained efforts by the Member States to overcome it. The relevant European Union’s efforts in the Horizon 2020 programme focus (among other actions) on the initiative on Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation, aiming at active networking between institutions for fostering excellence.
In today’s knowledge economy, societies will only thrive if they are able to identify their strong competitive advantage, a process already started in the current programming period with the efforts on Smart Specialisation Strategies deployed in the context of the new Cohesion policy (2014-20). We expect NCP_WIDE.NET to play also a bridging role with these initiatives.
As the Head of Unit in DG Research and Innovation that supports this project, I am delighted to be given the opportunity to greet you in visiting this site and I wish the network every success.”
